City of Abilene, Texas
The City of Abilene is located in an area of West Texas that has experienced a prolonged dry period lasting more than 10 years and resulting in record low lake levels for the water supplies that serve the city.
To avoid a water shortage, Abilene implemented an indirect potable reuse project that can deliver up to 7 million gallons per day of highly treated reclaimed water from its Hamby Water Reclamation Facility directly to Lake Fort Phantom Hill, one of the city’s primary surface water supplies. The treatment system includes membrane bioreactors with biological nutrient removal; this is followed by advanced treatment that includes reverse osmosis (RO) and ozone with biologically activated contactors (ozone/BAC), operated as parallel treatment systems. The project began delivering water to Lake Fort Phantom Hill in January 2015.
