Alameda County Water District and San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, California, USA – Exploring indirect and direct potable reuse

This project could provide a new purified drinking water supply utilising Union Sanitary District’s treated wastewater. Purified water produced by advanced water treatment could be transmitted to the Quarry Lakes Groundwater Recharge Area, to supplement recharge into the Niles Cone Groundwater Basin.

With the additional water supply produced by the project provided to Alameda County Water District, an in-lieu exchange with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission could result in more water left in the Regional Water System. Additional water supply could also be directly transmitted within Alameda County Water District’s service area, or to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission through a new inter-tie between Alameda County Water District and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s Bay Division Pipelines. Two alternatives, each with two phases, have been evaluated in the preliminary technical feasibility study for the project.
