Cities of San Jose, Santa Clara, and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, California, USA – Exploring Treated Water Augmentation regional project

In collaboration with the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is evaluating a joint purified water project. This project will provide a local benefit to San Jose and Santa Clara by providing 6.5 million gallons (24.6 million litres) a day to the two cities during all years. Additionally, this project will provide a dry-year supply of 3.5 million gallons (13.3 million litres) a day to the Regional Water System, on top of the all-year provision to San Jose and Santa Clara.

Only the 3.5 million gallons (13.3 million litres) a day to the Regional Water System is considered as a regional supply under the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Alternative Water Supply Plan.

San Jose and Santa Clara jointly own a Regional Wastewater Facility in San Jose that would provide the source water for the advanced treatment project as well as the land needed for project facilities. In 2023 the parties completed a preliminary feasibility study of the project.
