City of Altamonte Springs, Florida, USA – Exploring Treated Water Augmentation, could supply 4 cities.
The City of Altamonte Springs is in Central Florida. This region relies on high quality groundwater as a source of drinking water. Regional water supply studies indicate that this raw water supply is approaching the safe yield of the aquifer and alternative water supplies will be required to meet future demands. In many respects purified recycled water (potable reuse) represents the next best source of drinking water.
However, the use of membrane-based treatment is problematic due to the limited options available to manage the resulting brine in Central Florida. Working with the St. Johns River Water Management District, the City of Altamonte Springs constructed pureALTA, an ozone/BAF based treatment process, that demonstrated that membranes are not always required for potable reuse projects. In a 12 month study pureALTA successfully met all of the regulated and unregulated water quality targets.
