Monterey One Water, California, USA – Operating Groundwater Augmentation using 4 source waters

The Monterey region is isolated from state and federal water sources and must rely solely on its limited local water supplies (groundwater and surface water). Optimisation of all water resources is critical to meet the needs of our communities, and Pure Water Monterey is a national model for water reuse.

Pure Water Monterey, the first potable reuse project in Northern California, came online in 2020 and utilises advanced water treatment to turn four wastewater sources (recycled water from wastewater, stormwater, agriculture drainage water from crop irrigation and processing water from food packaging such as bagged salad) into a safe, dependable water supply that meets or exceeds strict state and federal drinking water standards.

An expansion of the project is currently under construction with completion estimated for the end of 2025. Once complete, Pure Water Monterey will provide more than 50% of the water supply for the Monterey Peninsula’s 106,000 residents in addition to landscape irrigation water for golf courses along the picturesque coastline. Tours of the production facility are available to share this critical water supply project with the community.
