Clean Water Services, Oregon, USA – Pioneered making beer with purified recycled water, and the Pure Water Wagon

The water used to make Pure Water Brew was cleaned at Clean Water Services’ Durham and Forest Grove water resource recovery facilities and then run through a high purity water treatment system. The different water sources help to demonstrate the adaptability of the high purity for a variety of sources of previously cleaned water. The high purity process uses some of the same purification technologies and techniques used by premium bottled water companies.

Between 2014 and 2019, Clean Water Services gave the purified water to some of Oregon’s best homebrewers with a simple directive: Craft the best-tasting beer you can. The suds they produced were phenomenal and took full advantage of the purified water, using it as a blank canvas to showcase their brewing creativity.

Additionally, the Pure Water Wagon is a mobile showcase of water purification technology.

Pure Water Brew is a demonstration project. Clean Water Services’ reuse program is currently focused on providing water for irrigation of golf courses, parks, and schools, to restore wetlands, and in the Fernhill Natural Treatment System adjoining our Forest Grove Resource Recovery Facility. Many people think that water is ever abundant in the Portland metro area, but water scarcity and unpredictability are growing issues. We anticipate the future need to incorporate direct potable reuse into our region’s water portfolio.
