Essex and Suffolk Water, Suffock, United Kingdom – Exploring indirect potable reuse river augmentation
Essex and Suffolk Water are in the early stages of developing a new reuse scheme, called Lowestoft Water Reuse. If approved, the scheme could provide 10 million litres (2.6 million gallons) per day of recycled water, which would be used to augment the River Waveny. The water will then be abstracted, 2 kilometres dowsntream, at the Barsham Water Treatment Works, for indirect drinking water supply.
This option is driven by reductions to abstraction licenses which will come into effect from 2027 and 2030, and limit the volume of water that can be taken from rivers or groundwater, to protect the environment. Meeting this will involve development of Lowestoft Water Reuse, building a new winter storage reservoir and meeting leakage and water efficiency targets.
