City of Phoenix, Arizona, USA – Planned groundwater augmentation
The City of Phoenix is planning to construct a new advanced water purification facility, Pure Water Phoenix at North Gateway, to turn recycled water into safe, purified drinking water. The project is supported by a planned $179 million investment from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and is scheduled to begin construction by 2029.
Once operational in 2034, North Gateway is expected to produce nearly 7 million gallons (26 million litres) per day of purified water – enough to serve approximately 25,000 households – expanding Phoenix’s local, renewable supply and reducing reliance on imported Colorado River water.
North Gateway is a critical component of Pure Water Phoenix, a multifacility initiative to deliver new purified drinking water supplies for residents and businesses.
Phoenix already recycles about 97% of its 70 billion gallons (265 billion litres) of wastewater each year for beneficial uses including agriculture, energy production, urban irrigation, aquifer recharge, and wetland support.
