Pyrolysis and Gasification of SA Water’s Biosolids – WSAA Occasional Paper No 10

WSAA Occasional Paper No 10

November 2004

A world wide review on thermal treatment of biosolids and subsequent production of renewable energy was conducted to ascertain details of the technologies commercially available today. The following treatment processes were selected for investigation:

(i) Gasification and direction of syngas into a gas turbine (G-GT)

(ii) Gasification followed by syngas and char combustion and direction of the subsequent flue gas into a steam turbine (G-ST)

(iii) Pyrolysis and direction of the resulting bio-oil into a diesel engine (P-DE)

(iv) Incineration and direction of the resulting flue gas into a steam turbine (I-ST)
