Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, California, USA – Planned Groundwater Replenishment Project

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s recycled water program started in 1979, and over the past 40 years established an award-winning program! Moving forward, the Department’s innovative approach to water reuse means several exciting, new projects are on the horizon.

On a larger scale, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is in the design phase of the Los Angeles Groundwater Replenishment Project and in the planning phase of Pure Water Los Angeles both in collaboration with the LA Bureau of Sanitation and Environment.

The Groundwater Replenishment Project signifies Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s proactive response to climate change and drought, with construction now underway and operations expected to start by summer 2028. (www.ladwp.com/gwr).

Pure Water Los Angeles is the new water supply initiative that aims to further diversify the City’s water supply portfolio, in order to mitigate future risks due to climate change. Similar to the Groundwater Replenishment Project, but on a larger scale, Pure Water Los Angeles aims to maximise the supply of advanced purified recycled water from the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant to replenish the city’s groundwater basins via indirect and/or direct potable reuse, by integrating purified recycled water with other supply sources in the City’s system.
