Los Angeles Department of Power and Water, California, USA – Planned Groundwater Replenishment Project
Los Angeles Department of Power and Water’s recycled water program started in 1979, and over the past 40 years established an award-winning program! Moving forward, the Department’s innovative approach to water reuse means several exciting, new projects are on the horizon.
On a larger scale, Los Angeles Department of Power and Water is in the design phase of the Los Angeles Groundwater Replenishment Project and in the planning phase of Pure Water Los Angeles both in collaboration with the LA Bureau of Sanitation and Environment.
The Groundwater Replenishment Project will include a 30 million gallon (113 million litre) per day advanced water purification facility and a visitors center. The purified water will be delivered to nearby spreading grounds and later pumped into the distribution system. The Groundwater Replenishment Project signifies Los Angeles Department of Power and Water’s proactive response to climate change and drought, with construction scheduled in 2025 and operational by 2028. Pure Water Los Angeles is the new water supply initiative that aims to further diversify the City’s water supply portfolio, in order to mitigate future risks due to climate change. Similar to the Groundwater Replenishment Project, but on a larger scale, Pure Water Los Angeles aims to maximise the supply of advanced purified recycled water from the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant to replenish the city’s groundwater basins via indirect and/or direct potable reuse, by integrating purified recycled water with other supply sources in the City’s system.
